The events that occur overtime in a person’s life are viewed as stories, some stand out as more significant or more fateful than others. These significant stories, have the power to shape one’s identity. If you see life as full of possibilities that are waiting to be discovered you can create a new narrative.As an expert in your own life here are few factors you can consider in reauthoring your story;
understand the your story- by mapping it out in terms of problem, impact of the problem and solutions tried.
Identify your story telling tendencies and the goal is to uncover opportunities for growth and development, find meaning and understand ourselves better.
go beyond the story- to see your self as an outside character. This will aid in creating ‘another frame of reference’ a different view of looking at it
look at the repeating themes in the story- this will help create critical analysis on how the story unfolds so that you can change it.
Stories organize our thoughts, help us find meaning, purpose and establish our identity in a confusing and sometimes lonely world- you can actively tell your story to a therapist or journal it yourself to reach all cited benefits.
the more the story is told the more it will allow high chances for reauthor it. the effect achieved this is also called externalizing conversation which allows people to consider their relationship with problems, thus considering change.it also allows one to uncover uncover the dreams, values, goals, and skills that define who they really are separate from their problems.
This approach aims not to conflate people identity with the problems they may face or the mistakes they have made.Rather it seeks to separate people’s identities from the problem they face, allowing them to engage in the construction and performance of preferred identities.
Reflection from Scripture
God has the power to change our stories but for him to do that we must allow him in our lives and embrace a changed life in holiness.Remember in his Holiness he can only interact with what is holy lest he consumes us. is this the only way you can participate? certainly not besides living a holy life you need to engage in active spiritual disciplines like; reading the word of God, prayer, fasting and fellowship with other believers.
below are various Bible verses to remind you what the Lord God almighty can do for you.
Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
John 16:33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
Isaiah 41:10 Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
Psalm 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
Ezekiel 36:26 And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
2 Corinthians 3:18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.J
